It is industry recognised that biological safety is of the upmost importance when handling pathogenic microorganisms within a laboratory environment. In line with the World Health Organisation Biosafety Guidelines we have developed level 2 and 3 biosafety mobile laboratories which deliver on function, cost and quality.
To determine the correct level of laboratory usage a risk assessment must be carried out. The risk assessment will provide a suitable biosafety level based upon all factors of the microbiological pathogen in question.
Once the correct biosafety level has been determined standard operating procedures can be developed to ensure the safest possible conduct of work.
Our design process follows a base model system which is then customised to meet the needs of the customer. We have a pre-selected equipment list which is used to meet the functional objectives of the customers needs.
CSC Plate Provision
Each container developed by GLSI must pass a technical requirement of the ‘International Convention for Safe Containers’ in order to be awarded a re-plate after modification. This is carried out on completion from the factory, whereby the modified ISO shipping container is given a CSC plate valid for 5 years. GLSI use an independent accredited inspector to carry out this service.
Any container used for international transport must have a valid safety approval plate or "CSC plate". CSC is the abbreviation for Container Safety Convention. A CSC plate is required on all ISO containers that are being used for Intermodal transport. The CSC plate acts as a container’s certificate of safety, and allows container depots, and international ports the assurance that a container is safe to be handled and transported whilst fully loaded.
Commissioning and Installation
The commissioning and acceptance criteria is defined early on at the project. The commissioning process provides the institution and the surrounding community with a greater degree of confidence that the structural, electrical, mechanical and plumbing systems, containment and decontamination systems, and security and alarm systems will operate as designed, to assure containment of any potentially dangerous microorganisms being worked with in a particular laboratory or animal facility.
We provide a commissioning agent who is independent of the architectural, engineering and construction team involved in the design and construction. The commissioning agent serves as an advocate for the institution client, involvement of the agent in the early programming phase of the project is essential.
BSL 2 & 3
Laboratory certification is the systematic examination of all safety features and processes within the laboratory (engineering controls, personal protective equipment and administrative controls). Biosafety practices and procedures are also examined.
Laboratory certification is an on-going quality and safety assurance activity that should take place on a regular basis. GLSI do not provide certification for a BSL level 2 & 3 facility as this is a process of continued accreditation through an external auditing body and the responsibility of the institution.
We can of course work with you to ensure the laboratory meets the requirements needed.
Heavy duty metallic body made from steel with seamless welding and reinforced corners (8). Sealed and waterproofed with heavy duty rubber door seals to enable a watertight space. 2mm corrugated sheet panels welded to the main structure.
50mm thermal insulation panels are placed in a sandwich design between steel corrugated walls and 4mm medium density fibreboard (MDF). Internal surface of the wall has a 2mm anti-bacterial and anti-static laboratory grade fibreglass panel which is seamless. The insulation has a U value higher than 55 W/m2 K. This is a minimum industry standard.
Doors and Windows
Main entrance door is galvanised steel. Lockable with sealed hinges. Self-closing mechanism. Vision panel. Door colour is RAL 9010 white. All doors are fitted with the International Biohazard Warning symbol and sign. Emergency exit door in the laboratory room, stainless steel or hot galvanised steel, with push-bar on the internal side, preventing simultaneous opening. All windows are made from safety glass with thermal insulation which keeps heat inside providing better energy efficiency.
Access and Levelling
Hydraulic stands one per corner of the container and with support pads, used for installation and levelling of the laboratory. It provides a safety measure to prevent the vehicle to move when stands are deployed. It is a remote control operated system for ease of use and the highest manual labour safety standards. Demountable type aluminium stairs with two handrails. Chatter plate and anti-slip steps. Made of galvanised steel. Heavy duty and resistant to atmospheric agents. Quick to assemble and dissemble.
The Air Pressure will be between 12.5Pa at each barrier door and the laboratory airlocks. This will form part of the acceptance testing criteria to ensure it meets the requirement. Indicators and alarms will provide response to air pressure differentiation.
Technical room is separate to the main laboratory and located at the container door end with a steel bulkhead partition. The room will be completely sealed from the main laboratory. The technical room will contain generator, water and waste tanks, electrical distribution board, HVAC system, back up batteries if required, air compressor system and vacuum system.
Air Tight Structure
Air tight structure will be tested to -200Pa to ensure it is airtight. This includes all electrical, plumbing and mechanical penetrations. Internal doors will be airtight, interlocked with a manual override. Self-closing mechanism with vision panel.
Internal windows in the laboratory, entry and filter ante-room shall be closed and sealed. All windows shall be equipped with safety glass and retractable curtains to provide a shadowing system.
Internal walls, ceilings, doors and floors shall be sealed, insulated and non-porous, suitable for laboratory use and gas/liquid decontamination procedures.
Walls and Ceilings
• insulated, non-porous, airtight sealed, waterproof and suitable for negative pressure;
• wall-to-wall and wall-to-ceiling radius coving;
• white or light colour, hard wearing smooth surfaces;
• hospital-grade materials and finishing (waterproof, anti-bacterial, antistatic, fire-retardant, chemical resistant and suitable for cleaning and disinfection);
• white RAL 9010.
Heavy duty floor structure, reinforcement nares and inside equipment fixing points. Isolated sandwich floor with plywood on inside and fibreglass externally. 18mm marine type plywood, 50mm isolation material. All floor surfaces will be covered 2mm anti-bacterial, anti-slip and anti-static washable hospital/laboratory grade vinyl flooring. 7cm oval skirting all around the inside floor corners. Easy to clean.
The technical room or the external technical compartments and panels shall be equipped for managing and monitoring all the technical systems such as electricity, air conditioning, water supply, security, alarms and communications. As per appropriate, such systems shall be directly accessed from outside the container and shall be controlled from the laboratory rooms.
The laboratory room will be sealable for gas decontamination purposes. Air system will allow for gas decontamination. UV-C decontamination lights in laboratory entrance and filter ante-room. With timer control and alarms.
Ventilation system capable of creating a directional airflow from the access zone to the interior of laboratory.
Separate HVAC lines (ducting, recirculation if applicable and filtering), non mixing, or systems for every room. Air conditioning and evacuation systems shall be equipped with digital monitoring, control panel and audio/visual alarms.
Air exhaust from the laboratory, the biological safety cabinets, the vacuum system and the airlock entry and filter rooms shall not be recirculated to other areas and shall be evacuated at safe distance from the air intakes and the people outside the facility.
Reversible Heat Pump System
Heat, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system shall be a reversible heat pump system with inverter function and non-CFC refrigerants. The HVAC system shall be able to manage a temperature≤ 20 C° and comfortable relative humidity range of 35 – 70 % at ≥ 20 vol/h in any room of the facility in any climatic condition (laboratory, airlock entry and filter rooms, technical rooms). Heavy duty HEPA intake filters, high efficiency 99.99 % for 0.3 μm particle size. The HVAC system may be installed externally. In this case, the system shall be supplied and installed with suitable external environment-resistant enclosure, rated at least IP54 or better according to applicable standards, for the motors and any other external parts.
Electrical system compliant to IEC regulations for mobile units, CE and/or FDA certified, integrated in ducts in the bodywork and supplied with complete diagrams. External power supplies mono-phase and three-phase, 50 – 60 Hz depending on country of destination, with optional configurations for various standards including 110 – 120 V and 220 – 240 V mono-phase and 115 to 120 V, 200 to 240 V and 380 to 480 V three-phase.
Water and Drainage
Water heater/s for supply to the sinks. Internal water supply will connect to external water supply and water tank. With non-return valves for inspection and testing. Clean water tank, capacity ≥ 200 l with level gauge, suitable for access and disinfection. Capacity ≥ 250 l with level gauge, suitable for access and disinfection. Capacity ≥ 150 l with level gauge, suitable for access and disinfection. Connectors, gauges and piping shall be available in the most common world standards. Back-flow protection devices for the external and water tank supplies and drain/sewage.
The overall capacity of the electrical system will depend on the custom design and shall be suitable for at least 30% overload of a fully equipped laboratory. Power connection sockets for external supply with waterproof interlocked sockets (must comply with socket and plug systems for country of destination). Plugs, sockets and connectors shall be available in the most common world standards.
Local Power Compatible
All equipment supplied with the laboratory shall be suitable for the local electrical power and plug/socket standard, without the installation of dedicated adapters or converters. Centralised Power Distribution Board
Centralised power distribution board all relevant on/off circuit breakers and on/off fuse blocks, HPFI relays. Centralised earthing/grounding system, with appropriate external probe and cable.
All structure and components shall be fire-resistant and fire-extinguishing or fire-retardant materials, with appropriate certifications. Fire detection and alarm system, with programmable stand-alone heat and smoke detection systems. Smoke detector in each room. Dry chemical ABC 6 kg fire extinguishers, at least n. 2 in the laboratory and n. 1 in the ante-room, and at least n. 2 fire suppression blankets.
Emergency automatic lighting system in all rooms and external over the entrance/exit and emergency doors, LED, battery powered, connected to the main electrical system and automatically recharging.
